Motorcycles can be a great mode of transportation, especially in a state with a year-round warm climate like Florida. But they can also be very dangerous for the rider. Car drivers sometimes do not pay as much attention as they should and are unaware of motorcycles on the road, which can lead to deadly motorcycle crashes.
That is exactly what occurred recently in Hernando County. A motorcycle driver was killed when he was hit by car at the intersection of Emerson and Powell roads. The crash occurred on a Sunday afternoon when the driver was pulling away from a stop sign. The driver moved into the intersection and into the path of the motorcyclist. The two vehicles collided.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, but that did not prevent the serious injuries sustained in the accident. The motorcyclist died later that day. The driver of the car was uninjured.
Motorcyclists are also at a much greater risk for serious injury in a crash than those who are riding in cars. Motorcyclists do not have the luxury of doors and airbags to prevent injury. That is why it is very important for everyone on the road to watch for motorcycles.
Unfortunately, accidents like this are all too common. Many car drivers involved in an accident with a motorcycle state that they did not see the motorcycle before the crash. But motorcyclists have the same right to be on the road and are owed the same respect as all other vehicles on the road.
